Record bid for Toldo turned down ITALY (goalnetwork) -- Fiorentina claim they have turned down a $50million bid for Italy’s Euro 2000 goalkeeper Francesco Toldo. The fee would have been a world record for a goalkeeper by some distance. Fiorentina president Vittorio Cecchi Gori refused to name the interested club, but said: "I told them Toldo was not for sale. We’re holding on to him. He's unique. You can't put a price on that sort of talent." The 28-year-old, who started the Euro tournament as Italy's second choice keeper, played one of his greatest-ever games in the semi-final against Holland. He pulled off a brilliant penalty save during the match then performed heroics in the shootout to put the Italians into the final. Two outstanding seasons with Fiorentina earned him a place in Dino Zoff’s squad. Then an injury to regular number one Gianluigi Buffon, in a friendly against Norway on the eve of Euro 2000, gave Toldo a place in the starting line-up.
